The cross we all carry

Writer: The Useless RunnerThe Useless Runner

Solace [noun] ~ /ˈsɒlɪs/

"comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness."

Whenever I think about the good and bad things in life, I can't help but to wonder how others feel when they face their own challenges.

When we sit in a room full of people and we look around, it is impossible to know what they are going through. So much happiness and pain. So many stories all in one place. Never for us to realize those amazing or painful memories they all have, and which of those they may have in common with you.

I do not know how my personality reflects to others. I don't know if I am likeable, or annoying.

We don't always see or perceive what others are going through. We just see what they present to us when we interact with them.

People go about their lives always talking about the good old days, and how everything was better in the past. How kids played outside and there was no technology to keep them busy 24/7. The good old days when families sat at the dinner table and had home cooked meals. When parents worked 2 jobs to put food on the table.

I think the old days were good because of what they mean to us personally, and the effect they had in our lives.

I always complained about how my parents were too strict with us. I never understood why I had to wake up at 5:30 am to study for a test in school, or why I had to go to the local market on Sundays at 6 am. We all have these kind of memories burried in our brain, and they shaped the person we become.

But we also had sad memories. Painful memories. Those that remind us of the cruel reality that is always here and now, and had a big impact in the adults we become. Not all of us had those, but some do.

As adults, there are also events in our life, good and bad, that change us. We all deal with life and the punches it throws at us, and yet we see each other every day not knowing what the person in front of us is dealing with.

What are their worries

What pain do they carry

What makes them happy

What makes them sad

What painful memories they carry with them

We wake up every morning without realizing how big of a miracle world we live in, and take everything for granted; the air we breath, the sun light that warms our skin. The people we see, and feeling their presence in our lives. We don't say it enough, but we should be grateful for this miracle we call life.

We will wake up one day and realize that life has gone on. It has gone on without those who have left us, and will continue to go on without those who are yet to come. We are passengers, and we will too one day have to get off to make room for others.

This is one of the certain facts of life. The memories, good and bad, that propel us forward and gives us that instinct to protect our families, and teach our kids not to make the same mistakes we made. But we are human, and they will make some of those mistakes. But they too will overcome them and learn from them.

Never judge a book by its cover.

You never know what is going on in someone's life. You never know how big is the cross they are carrying.

Thank you for reading.

In the words of an amazing artist (Pablo Milanes) and one of his songs......

Those [good old] glory days

they flew away and I did not notice

only my own memories help me hold what once was

I live with ghosts

who feed me dreams and false promises

which do not give me back

those [good old] glory days I once had.

.....

The [good old] glory days

they went away

and they took everything

everything I once was

.....
