Forever faster

Writer: The Useless RunnerThe Useless Runner

Fast [adjective] - /fɑːst/

"moving or able to move rapidly."

In 2009, Usain Bolt ran the 100 meter sprint in 9.58 seconds at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, going faster than any man has ever before. His average speed during the finals was 37.58 Km/h (23.35 mph). He broke the world record and it stands to this day.

Doing some research on the subject, I found out that the 100 meter sprint only changed by 1.22 seconds in 118 years!. This is a crazy stat. With all the technological advances of our age and time, only a mere 1.22 seconds have been taken away from the initial record since it began.

That is a bit of history to set the tone of this post.

We all have a faster 'me' inside. We just need to find it.

I first began running in 2018. I was not too focused on times, I just wanted to train and be healthier. But as you progress with your training and you start seeing the benefits it brings, it gets you curious about how much better you can do. I started checking my heart rate and timing specific runs trying to beat my best time on certain distances. Usually you would do the 5K, 10K and the half marathon distances.

I am sure there is a lesson there somewhere about discipline and good habits. But I think this goes beyond that. This is pure effort and grinding. This is go all out there and do the best you can for that period of time. I have written about it before; the pain and suffering that goes along with those efforts, and how they relate to other things in life we thought difficult or impossible.

As I start this amazing journey again, going on those runs and bike rides. Getting in the pool and starting moving again, I feel like that hunger is back, and it itches like never before. I want to test myself again and demonstrate to my old self what the faster 'me' looks like, and try and do all the hard things I have set out to do in the past.

I am no Usain Bolt, but it does not mean I can't reach for the stars and get faster and better. Bolt's 9.58 may mean 15 for me. But it MEANS something, because is the best I can do and the best I can achieve doing the things I have to do in order to get there.

We all have our own greatness. We just need to find it. The faster 'me' inside knows it, and wants it.

I am back. Let's grind.

Thanks for reading. Now let's watch bolt break that record.
